Day 25 - R&R in Perth II

Another day of rest in Perth, dropping off the bike for service and a visit to Freo.

Quick Stats

  • 1 hours on bike
  • 40 km
  • 9010 km total

Early wake up as I'm eager to get the bike in soon as possible. I jump on the bike and ride the thirty kilometres to the mechanic on the far edge of town.

It turns out Perth is a real city, and it takes time to get places, but Google navigation makes it feel like spaghetti as a take about half a dozen highways to get there.

A workmate meets me at the mechanic and we head to Fremantle for a look around.

Before there was much of Perth, there was the Port of Fremantle. Set up by the English in 1829 to claim the West Coast for Brittania, it didn't really serve a lot of purpose for a while. It wasn't until 1850 they started shipping over convicts and it quickly became the primary penal colony in Australia.

Round House. 1829. Oldest building in the West

A short visit to the maritime museum showed it was a major fishing and shipping port after that point, with the Swan River used as a transport corridor for the enormous inland gold rush.

Perth was the administrative centre of the region, but didn't really grow like Fremantle until this gold rush exploded the population.

The museum is a bit directionless, so I wonder through the random exhibits, taking in the enormous sail boats from the Americas cup that the Westerners raced with.

... then walk out the door and turn left into the brewery next door.

And then after a few beers, walk down to the next brewery down the road a bit.

A couple more beers its time to head back and get my bike.

I'm writing this about midnight as I fell asleep at 4 pm when I got back to the hotel.

Tomorrow its time to continue on. The weather has been splendid the last two days. I hope it continues, but I'm not expecting it to.
